Guide to UK Health & Safety Signage

Health and safety signs follow the Health and Safety Regulations of 1996 which provide guidance for employers who hold responsibility for the control of their workplaces.

“Safety signs and signals are required where, despite putting in place all other relevant measures, a significant risk to the health and safety of employees and others remains.” (HSE)

Safety signs might warn of hazards but also indicate where actions must take place, for example the wearing of protection gear, prohibiting actions or the use of safety equipment.

Safety signs are colour coded for clarity of their purpose:

  • Yellow or amber signs provide a warning that the individual must take precautions
  • Red signs warn that certain types of behaviors might result in a risk to health and safety so these signs show what or who is not allowed.
  • Blue and white signs are mandatory signs because they show what actions or behavior is required eg. the wearing of a hard hat
  • Green emergency signs typically indicate exit routes, first aid areas or stations
